A Paralympic update

The USA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team has won Paralympic gold in Beijing defending their championship run of four years ago in Athens.  The team got off to a sluggish start and went to a full court press which slowed down the team from Germany and the US went on to a 50-38 win. The USA Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team goes for the bronze medal in their match-up with Great Britain today.

On the final day of swimming at the Water Cube, Team USA added to their total by capturing four medals.  Kelley Becherer took gold in the women’s 50 meter freestyle.  Cheryl Angelelli-Kornoelje won silver in a 50 meter free event and Ashley Owens brings home silver in the 400 freestyle while teammate Susan Beth Scott wins bronze.  In all, the United States won 44 swimming medals.

At the Bird’s Nest on Monday, Jeremy Campbell won the gold medal in discus. Jessica Galli won two silver medals yesterday, one in the women’s 200 meters and the second in the ladies 800. There’s also a silver medal for Peter Gottwald, Junior in the men’s 800 and in the men’s long jump, Raleigh, North Carolina’s Alex Gillette wins silver.

The United States will compete for Paralympic gold in Wheelchair Rubgy today as they go up against Australia.  Andy Cohn was a key element in Team USA’s semifinal win against Great Britain.
