Who’s number one in college football? Right now it is Texas! But Penn State and Alabama are also undefeated. So who is number one? We talk about college football with a sports columnist for the Birmingham News, Ray Melick.

Ray also talks about the insecurity in college football coaching. Earlier this week, Tyrone Willingham resigned from Washington. Who’s next? Are the seats getting hot for Tommy Tuberville at Auburn and Phil Fulmer at Tennessee?

National Football League – Colts

It’s been a frustrating season for the Indianapolis Colts. After years of consistent success, the Colts have had an injury plagued, up and down start.  Monday night the Colts lost to Tennessee, they’re now 3-4 on the season.

On this edition of Sports Spectrum Today we talk with the veteran center of the Colts, Jeff Saturday and rookie tight end, Jacob Tamme.

Jeff missed some of the early part of the season due to injuries. He’s back and playing now, but not at 100 per cent. He shares his thoughts on why he’s playing even though injured and how tough it was not to play early in the season.

Jacob Tamme talks about making the adjustment from college football to the NFL and both players talk about what it’s like to play for Tony Dungy. Both have seen Tony in good and bad times and they share how his faith impacts the team.

The NASCAR season is down to the final few weeks and Jimmie Johnson is on pace to win his third consecutive points title. How does he do it, year after year, race after race? Well according to our racing analyst, Ron Pegram, Johnson’s success is no accident.

We talk with Ron about all things NASCAR on this edition of Sports Spectrum Today. He shares his observations on why Johnson is successful and also shares what we can learn from Johnson’s success.

Jeff Mullen – College Football

It’s not easy being a young football coach. Nor is it easy to be a first year offensive coordinator at a program with high expectations. But that’s the case for Jeff Mullen, he tells us about it on this edition of Sports Spectrum Today.

Jeff has already taken fire from West Virginia football fans—the offense has struggled early in the season. This isn’t unusual—he and many other offensive and defensive coordinators around the country are unfairly criticized each week by fans. Earlier this season Auburn fired their offensive coordinator, Tony Franklin.

Despite the pressure and the criticism, Jeff talks about his motivation for coaching. He also talks about why he enjoys the profession and describes the relationship that an assistant coach should have with his head coach.

Carl Erskine – Major League Baseball

There’s nothing quite like October baseball. The World Series for sports fans is a special highlight of the year. Many of us can look back at different stages in our life with reference to our World Series memories.

On this edition of Sports Spectrum Today, we listen to some World Series memories of a former pitcher for the old Brooklyn Dodgers, Carl Erskine. Carl pitched for the Dodgers in the late 1940′s and throughout the 1950′s. It was a very romantic time in baseball when all three teams in New York were having consistent success. 

Carl talks about playing with and against Hall of Famers such as Don Newcombe, Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle. He also talks about an unsung hero of the Dodgers, Roy Campanella.

It’s a step back into baseball history. Start off your week listening to a visit with former baseball pitcher, Carl Erskine on this edition of Sports Spectrum Today.

Basketball, College and NFL Football

Saturday’s Sports Spectrum takes our conversations to basketball, college football, and the NFL. The opening of the NBA season is here. We talk with one of the most successful NBA executives in history in Jerry Colangelo. Jerry was the longtime President and General Manager of the Phoenix Suns.  He’s now the Executive Director of USA Basketball and helped assemble the 2008 U. S. Olympic basketball team that won the Gold Medal. He shares some of his NBA and Olympic memories.

We also talk about the NFL with two members of the Indianapolis Colts, rookie tight end, Jacob Tamme and veteran center Jeff Saturday. It’s been a frustrating season for the Colts thus far.  But there’s a strong nucleus of Christian players and coaches that keep the team on an even keel.

In college football, we talk with Big East broadcaster, Tony Caridi from West Virginia. It’s not been a banner season for the Big East, but the conference race should be very competitive. Tony shares his thoughts on the conference this season.

In our last segment we look for a phone call from you. This last weekend of October is an exciting time in sports. We have the World Series, big games in college football and the NFL. In NASCAR the Chase for the Championship is in the stretch run, the NHL is underway and the NBA is starting soon. So we’d like to know what you’re most interested in watching or listening to this weekend.
